26. 11. 2025.New serotype of Salmonella bacteria
In the laboratory of the Veterinary Specialist Institute Kraljevo (Kraljevo, Republic of Serbia), a novel serotype of the genus Salmonella was identified from an anal swab of a horned viper (Vipera ammodytes) originating from the locality Milošev Do, Prijepolje, Republic of Serbia. The isolate was characterized as Salmonella enterica subsp. diarizonae with the antigenic formula 17: l,v:z. This strain represents a newly recognized serotype of Salmonella, reported here for the first time worldwide. The finding has been confirmed by leading and reference laboratories for enterobacteria and salmonellae, including the Pasteur Institute (Paris), IHU (Hamburg), and the CDC (Atlanta). T The novel serotype will be included in the forthcoming edition of the White-Kauffmann-Le Minor scheme.
The isolate was submitted for confirmation with the authorization of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, Government of the Republic of Serbia, Veterinary Directorate, under official letters 323-02-04025/217-5 (May 25, 2017) and 323-02-13923/2022-5 (December 23, 2022. year).
